    Vale Ron Lucas

A few days ago a wonderful man passed away. His name was Professor Ron Lucas and he was one of a great team who cared for many AIDS patients at Fairfield Hospital.

I will never forget him, during the demise of my companion Phillip Elliott in the early 90s, as Ron was on hand with knowledge and kindness that impressed all Phil's friends and family.

Phil admired Ron's frankness about his chances of survival and one thing that I remember Phil smiling about was their mutual interest in cryptic crossword deduction.

In those years, there was only one drug to treat HIV and that was a new and misapplied anti-retroviral named AZT, and I observed how very frustrating it was for those pioneering doctors such as Ron and Norm Roth (who is still caring for us) to see many fine people pass over before experience taught them more about AZT and other emerging drugs that would treat HIV/AIDS.

Often I think of that experience at Fairfield Hospital and the wonderful doctors and nurses (even the artisans) who welcomed me during the most stressful time of my life. I and many other survivors have been deeply touched by their efforts. God speed, Professor Lucas.
