[In response to Kate O’Halloran’s article on actor Joe Dallesandro’s status as a gay icon.] I find this article to be a bit alarmist and overreaching, even if it is well-intended. Joe has been quoted thousands of times on his (and others') sexuality and you've built an entire theory around ONE comment. No one is going to think homosexuality or bisexuality (or even just curiosity) are farces because he “got used to it”. In fact, I think it's rather admirable that anyone would publicly admit to their sexuality being so fluid – especially in our current label-obsessed culture. The only real "divide between fiction and fact" here is the one forced upon this actor throughout his public life. His genteel honesty and openness should not be used against him. Nor should his celebrated good looks, charm, and candour be taken as some sort of assault on REAL gayness. This is the type of rhetoric which, as a gay man, I worry will only push tolerance backwards. We don't need fewer bi-curious celebrities "reinforcing the divides" – we need fewer poorly rendered theories about sexuality. But thanks for trying. Lampwick via email
