They rolled out the carpet when the HIV services were transferred from Fairfield Hospital to the Alfred Hospital. [Then] the carpet was rolled back a bit, so we fought, we fought hard and donated money to have Fairfield House built, and it was, and for those of us with HIV we were told it was for us. Now the carpet has been taken away, there’s not even a welcome mat. Persons like myself with HIV and other conditions cannot now get respite at Fairfield House for ourselves, or to give our carers a break. Yes, they will say, there was a review, a review that I made a submission to that was not acknowledged, nor have I seen a final report... I am still waiting. So where do we go, those of us who need extra care? A doctor from the Alfred suggested to my doctor that I go to Horizon Place! I would like for the said doctor to spend a day there, let alone a week there with the permanent residents. A number of months ago the Alfred redesigned its logo, omitting their founding motto “Service and Care”. I remarked then that this was cause for concern, but no one listened. Now it seems there is some service and some care, for SOME. As I said at the beginning, the welcome mat has been well and truly removed. Michael Carrum Downs via facsimile
