Back when directors still saw potential in the acting ability of Kylie Minogue – “She’s our very own Madonna – singer and actor!” – Chris Thomson cast her in our very own Rebel Without A Cause. Underage love in 1950s small town Australia couldn’t go wrong and, what’s more, producers could shave down the budget by having Minogue on the soundtrack: win, win! Allegedly a coming-of-age tale, The Delinquents is squarely rooted in soap opera, as two love-lorn misfits rail against an unforgiving society that just won’t let them be who they want to be. For such sudsy action, Minogue was a natural fit and the camera never stops looking at her. A brief topless scene didn’t hurt, which is more than can be said of her curious super-perm that sits about three decades out of date. Not that a pre-teen fan-base could care less. It’s about armchair rebellion, the kind your Mum approves of. And it had Charlene in leather. Did you know… Manufactured as a star-vehicle for Ms Minogue, The Delinquents was Kylie’s motion picture debut. She has since appeared in Street Fighter with JCVD and Moulin Rouge! as the Green Fairy. Kylie appears on the soundtrack with a cover of The Imperial’s classic, ‘Tears On My Pillow’. The Delinquents was shot by Andrew Lesnie who won an Oscar for his work on LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring. Mac Gudgeon co-wrote the screenplay with Clayton Frohman (Defiance). The Wollongong native also wrote Last Ride which is in cinemas now. Look out for Rosemary Harris as Isobel. She is best known as Spiderman’s nanna, May Parker. |
