Tim Bateson, visual arts convenor for the Midsumma Festival, says now’s the time for artists to apply to be part of Midsumma 2010. “We’re calling for local, established and emerging artists in Melbourne,” Bateson explains, adding Melburnians may be unaware of the opportunity available to them. Emerging visual artists who have a show, or parts of a show, are urged to contact Bateson within the next two months. “We take on artists and do studio visits and sort of mentor the work up to the festival. The other end of the spectrum would be someone who is already confident about having a show and we look for a location for them.” Bateson says the publicity associated with Midsumma can be a great help to local queer artists. “We got over 200 to the launch of Queer City [this] year and the Yarra Arts program was well-attended over the three weeks. We certainly get the numbers through the gallery and we got a lot of reviews as well. One artist was purchased by the NGV and by Artbank.” Midsumma 2010 is also looking for curators who can put together a small show, four or five artists, or a larger program, Bateson says.
